All aglow...

Just another created for our exhibition 'All Creations Great and Small' recently.

A full sheet of Canson Mi-Teintes 'Touch' paper selected worked right to the corners of the 50 x 65cm sheet and with Unison, Rembrandt, and other pastels and thus a larger 'great' category painting for exhibition.

It's 'great' to see it ready for the framers that's for sure...

...next!

New for the show!

Just completed this latest painting and I'm personally delighted with it!

It's another showing the simplicity and impact of creatively working in black and white created using Nitram charcoal, Rembrandt pastels and Unison soft pastels on a black sheet of Canson Mi-Teintes 'Touch' pastel paper-  fabulous to work on and so responsive!

I'm really looking forward to getting it framed pronto and including in our joint forthcoming show.

You are all invited so do come along for a glass of wine, nibbles and to share time amongst friends and family whilst you wander amongst our work.

You never know something may take your fancy...including a sculpture or a painting!!

See you there, we look forward to meeting you.

A date for your diary with the Dalesman at Danby

Delighted to see some great coverage for our forthcoming show 'All Creations Great and Small' at the 'Inspired By...Gallery', North York Moors Visitors Centre, at Danby, North Yorkshire, featured in the April edition of the 'Dalesman' this month!

Really thrilling to have out work featured with all the other special events happening soon throughout North Yorkshire and beyond.

We've had such a positive response to the article already - thank you Dalesman!

With only just over 2 weeks to go until we open the doors on Friday 17 April and show our work until 4 May for you at the prestigious 'Inspired By...Gallery' exhibition space, there is still plenty to do!

We are putting the last minute touches to our work, getting things framed and having our work delivered, boxed up, packaged and ready for the show!

It's going to be a good one! There will be lots to see from thrilling sculptures by Stef, drawings, paintings, cards and prints from all of us with 30 paintings a piece at least!

With  art demonstration by us on 'meet all the artists' day on Saturday 18 April (10-3pm) all of us, sharing drinks and nibbles with you as you view the show, are bound to entertain you. All 'great and small' works of art offering styles to thrill at affordable prices are perfect to help you begin to start an art collection or to inspire you if you are looking for that special 'something' as a stand out piece in it's own right!

This part of our 3 week show is fab for all the family to come to, get involved and watch and see! A special day indeed shared with you!

We think the North York Moors, the wildlife, the landscape and the people is so special we decided to show you how we felt with all our creativity we share with you.

I'm sure you will too once you see the show!

A creative appointment with the BEEB!

This morning something really special happened - I helped one of my favourite radio presenters Richard Stead (from BBC Radio Leeds) create a pastel painting during his live broadcast at BBC Radio Leeds, right in the heart of the city.

As a spin off from the 'Big Painting Challenge' series currently running on BBC One, I was invited to meet Richard Stead thanks to the SAA (Society for All Artists), who support the main BBC series with a great calendar of art events throughout the country that anyone interested in art can go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/45HsC9TFbYTPpdYPcnwSYYT/events

Preparations are made for Richard to begin

Richard outlines the shapes...between broadcasting

Richard builds up the painting layers

Richard chooses more colours as part of the creative process
Teaching Richard whilst broadcasting was really great. I have to say, I was totally amazed how Richard mastered so many things at the same time by co-ordinating everything so professionally to the split second, keeping his eye on the ball with his producer and all the while switching between screens and computer programmes and then...between all of that, create a lovely colourful painting (with just a few pointers from me), following one of my finished paintings of the East Coast of Yorkshire with an amazing result...as you can see!

It was thrilling to share my art skills with Richard and his team and all the BBC Radio Leeds listeners too.

My original painting that Richard was following to try out his pastel techniques will form part of a major collection of my work in a joint exhibition called 'All Creations Great and Small' at the North York Moors Visitors Centre 'Inspired By...Gallery', 17th April 2015 – 4th May 2015, to be held at The Moors National Park Centre, Lodge Lane, Danby, Whitby YO21 2NB.

All our landscape, seascape and wildlife paintings with sculpture in the show are influenced by the wonderful North York Moors National Park itself.

Here is my original painting Richard was working from:-

Featured painting:
Towards Runswick Bay - East Yorkshire
Pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes 'Touch' 335gsm pastel paper
14 X 14 inches (36 x 36cm)

Our visually exciting and stunning exhibition with paintings by Helen Patterson, Jo Garlick, and Robert Dutton with sculpture by Stef Ottevanger, is free and indeed an exhibition with a difference suitable for all the family to see.

With an added extra as part of the show there is a special and exciting ‘meet the artists’ day on Saturday 18 April, with demonstrations by all participating artists showing different aspects of creativity for everyone to enjoy!

Sharing the warmth at Higham Hall this Winter

Camp coffee time at St. Bega's church near Higham hall! Now...who has the matches?

Dispelling the myth that the Winter is not a good time to paint outdoors, we all enjoyed a superb drawing and painting week at Higham Hall recently sharing true friendship and creating some really expressive art together - even the sun shone for us!

It was Perfect timing really with dry weather for our Ashness Bridge drawing trip 2 days into art break with dramatic mist over distant Skiddaw beyond Derwentwater seen from our vantage point, creating some atmospheric distant soft light for us all to draw.

Choosing to draw the Winter view from Ashness Bridge (one of the most celebrated and iconic views in The Lake District) in comparison to Summer or Spring, the  view was very different with space between all the trees void of foliage showing a much more distinctive view.

Working with pure line and tone with charcoal and mixed black and white media was perfect to interpret all the subtleties in the landscape.

Following a short but in depth initial demonstration to get everyone started and see the different media in action, it was great to see how quickly everyone got into their stride to draw and paint the view in their own special way.

A surprise trip around the head of Newlands Valley on our return was well worth the detour to see the majestic fells, snow line and high mists in this beautiful dramatic Lakeland valley on such a great day.

With regular stops for photo opportunities not to be missed many formed the basis of students work over the next couple of studio days - fabulous!

Our second outdoor sketching and drawing trip to St. Bega's church along the far shore of Bassenthwaite Lake couldn't have been better planned. The weather was perfect - warm and Sunny, more like an early Spring day really with some great work and fun painting outdoors had by all!

On our way back from lakeshore at Bassenthwaite Lake there was another trip in store for everyone - a short skip and a hop up the old Carlile Road with some great views over looking Skiddaw from a very different viewpoint - fabulous light!

With several evening demonstrations showing lots of different techniques for different subjects (not just Lakeland Landscapes) on Canson professional papers it was really great to share lots of techniques for black and white media for many different subjects.

Another fabulous art break at Higham Hall with lots of happy memories for all of us creating great works of art learning lots of new and exciting art techniques.

Our happy evenings exchanging stories in the bar and emails and contact addresses by all at the end of the course and fun had by all throughout was the perfect conclusion to another successful art break at Higham Hall.

I'm back again in March '15 for another great art week. I'm looking forward to meeting a new art group for another thrilling art break!
