Traveling from far and wide to paint beautiful, colourful landscapes of Cumbria!

What an absolute delight to have recently taught a great group of art students at Higham Hall (located amidst the beautiful Western Fells in The lake District), new art techniques in Cumbria's thrilling landscape.

All who travelled far and wide from across the UK and abroad to be with me - thanks!
An absolute pleasure keeping you all 'creatively' entertained day and night I must say!

A very special thanks to Sue Hensley who travelled all the way from the beautiful picturesque town of Mooresville, Alabama USA to be with me and paint some amazing paintings in oils both in the studio and outdoors in our beautiful, classic UK countryside.

A long time since I painted in oils so thanks Sue for awakening my art techniques with them which I was delighted to pass on to you. For one - you'll never use those brushes the same again will you!

Thanks to everyone - students and helpful friendly staff alike at Higham Hall for making our July fun in the sun and studio art holiday a really special one!

Here's just one of our fun packed days from a great painting week in action...

I'm looking forward to teaching again at Higham Hall in November '15 - acrylics this time for some more really exciting painting experiences both indoors and out!

3 in 1...or is that 4?

It all starts with the drawing...in this case further along the cliffs away from Runswick Bay on the Heritage East Coast on location.

The en plain air sketch was framed, the pastel created from that in the studio as well I loved the place so much I went back a further 3 times consecutively (come rain or shine) to create this triptych!

Pardon me? You cannot see it all? Well, every framed piece will be fully displayed  at 'The station Gallery' Saltburn-by-the-Sea in my solo show all through August '15.

Exhibition starts Saturday 1 August '15. Come and see them then!

A creative approach to the 'bigger picture'

What a fabulous experience we all had together painting at Higham Hall near Keswick in The Lake district recently on a superb expressive painting art week.

Throughout the whole art week teaching it was really fab to teach everyone so much  - including how not to 'freeze' when that big white sheet of paper is right there in front of you!

This painting 'Striding edge - Helvelyn, Cumbria' takles just that. I threw myself into the demo and at several points 'threw paint at the painting as well'!

Here's how it looked and how it developed for everyone...

Thanks to David Robson (one of the students on the art break) who sent these to me! Much appreciated...to share again with you all the joy of painting at inspirational Higham Hall in the Western Fells in Cumbria!

If you want to come and join me I’m back again in the Autumn from 1-6 November 15 to teach again so come and join in the fun! We’ll have our own fireworks by the look of things!

Hitting the mark in Robin Hood country!

Crashing waves at North Landing - Flamborough, East Yorkshire Coast
Pastel on Canson Mi-Teites 'touch 350gsm pastel paper
(Unfinished...but not by much!)

It would seem that it is very much flavour of the month for seascapes in Nottinghamshire at the moment which is great as they are amongst one of my favourite subjects to paint!

Having had two successful workshops supported by 'The artist' magazine and Canson papers at 'Patchings Art Festival 15' at Calverton near Nottingham recently in June, it was great to be invited back to Nottinghamshire for a fantastic art group near Retford to give another demonstration for a seascape - purely with pastels this time!

Choosing Canson Mi-Teintes 'Touch' 35gsm pastel paper (colour 354 sky grey) was the perfect colour background for my seascape to support sharp foreground tones and pale background tints at the same time.

Here we are all having fun and enjoying each others company learning a lot...between some great audience participation! Fantastic!

A fab afternoon in Nottingham! I'm looking forward to coming back as soon as I can!

Dreaming of cool moorland Autumn air

High above Bradshaw woods, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire
Pastel on Canson Mi-Teintes 'Touch' 350gsm pastel paper
(unfinished)

What a fab opportunity I was given recently to meet some really enthusiastic artists in Huddersfield who were as passionate about their local landscape as I am also!

Although I live in Leeds I'm not that far away and I try and get deep into the Pennines, as often as I can particularly around Huddersfield in Kirklees as the landscape has a raw beauty all of its own.

The painting was a demonstration painting for the group and a delight to do with fantastic weather outside beaming in. the Summer sun is great, but nothing beats that cool moorland breeze - especially in the Autumn, high in the fells surrounded by all that glorious Autumn colour!

Thinking big...and working big!

I've just come back from Higham Hall having had a fabulous week from 2 - 6 July watching the students I've had the privilege to teach (to include one dear lady Sue Hensley who came to be with me all the way from the USA) develop during our wonderful art week together in so many different ways.

This painting was one I created during the week in an evening demonstration (one of 4 during the art break) using mixed media on the wonderful Canson papers. Absolutely FANTASTIC textures!

Here are the stages...in that fun hour!

Thanks to David Robson (one of the students on the art break) who sent these to me! Much appreciated...to share again with you all the joy of painting at inspirational Higham Hall in the Western Fells in Cumbria!

I'm keeping my framer busy too! Paintings are complete and being framed between all of the above I'm raring to go to get them to the galleries who are asking for them.

There is an all important art show occurring too very soon - The Ilkley Art Show  14 - 15 August '15, at the Kings Hall and Winter gardens, llkley, North Yorkshire were I'll be this year giving demonstrations and a workshop supported by 'The Ilkley Art Shop' and Canson papers (being a UK Ambassador and proud to carry the Canson flag for them).
